WHAT IS SMOKE TESTING?
The use of ‘odour-proof’ buildings and containers is a key element of odour management, but careful testing is needed to ensure that weak points in the construction are not allowing odours to escape. Smoke testing involves filling a building with oil vapour in order to identify the leakage points, as a pre-cursor to carrying out remedial action.
HOW IS SMOKE TESTING CARRIED OUT?
The process of filling the building with visible oil vapour takes around twenty minutes using smoke generators. The leakages are then noted and captured using photographs and video. The process is undertaken twice, once with the air-extraction system operating, and once without.
The resulting data can then be used by our clients to pinpoint the weaknesses in the building, and seal them to prevent future odour leakage.

A building smoke test can benefit businesses
At Silsoe Odours we have learnt that the most damage can be done when businesses are unaware of odour leakage. Whilst odour-proof buildings appear to be an ideal solution, any construction making this claim needs to be subject to regular testing in order to maintain its initial guarantee.
Client testimonials
Don’t take our word for it – here’s what our clients say:
I decided to engage Silsoe Odours after we received reports of an odour nuisance from a first floor office tenant. They had a clear understanding of our requirements and were very accommodating. As the office building has multiple tenants timing was key, we required an out of hours survey. From instruction, Silsoe Odours promptly attended the property to undertake smoke testing and provided a detailed report with recommendations to resolve the issue. I also received positive feedback from my client on-site, who mentioned how well the survey was conducted. I would highly recommend Silsoe Odours for all of our future odour issues, as they provide a friendly yet professional service throughout the company.

I contacted Silsoe Odours as one of our neighbours was complaining of a smell from our unit. I needed to find out where it was coming from and how to resolve it. Everyone I spoke to at Silsoe Odours was really friendly and helpful, and quickly arranged to complete a smoke test for me. The person who came out to site knew exactly what he was doing and set out a plan straight away when he arrived. He followed through with that and delivered good results in a report that was easy to use, as well as solving some of the problems while he was on site. He also left me with a sensible plan of action to solve the remaining issues. I’d be glad to recommend Silsoe Odours to anyone facing similar odour problems.
